Williams’s Medieval Madness is quite simply one of the most popular pins of all time, and consistently rates as ‘the best of the best’ amongst fans on the Pinball Machine Database.

Now increasingly hard to find, these fabulously entertaining tables have won praise for almost every aspect of the package including the artwork, the soundtrack, the play field  toys and of course the rip-roaring gameplay.

So what makes Medieval Madness so great? Once in a while everything comes together to produce a true classic, and Medieval Madness (or ‘MM’ as the aficionados prefer to call it) can justifiably take its place alongside all time greats like ‘The Twilight Zone’ and ‘The Addams Family’. It really is a very special machine.

With design by Brian Eddy and artwork by John Youssi and Greg Freres, ‘MM’ was introduced to great acclaim by Wiliams in June 1997 and went on to a total run of 4,016 units. The launch slogan was ‘Behold the Renaissance of Pinball’ and for once the marketing team weren’t exaggerating!

With a title like this you won’t be surprised to hear that the table is themed around fantasy, wizards and sorcery, all of which makes for some epic action on the playfield. A run down of the features barely begins to hint at the possibilities within but when you learn that ‘MM’ incorporates pop up trolls, a flying dragon and an exploding castle then you might get some idea of the excitement to come. 

The exploding castle is described by some as the most exciting playfield toy ever devised, requiring spilt second timing to shoot the ball through the open drawbridge when the opportunity arises. The gameplay comes with multiple shot challenges and is incredibly engaging for novices and experts alike, though you'll have to be very good indeed to make it through to the end. This table has a deep rule set and is consistently challenging, which partly explains why 'MM" is so highly regarded by the fans.

Also contributing enormously to its appeal is the look and feel of the playfield itself, which is packed with lights and stunning artwork. And it doesn't stop there...the audio quality on these tables is second to none, boasting terrific content which is by turns atmospheric and even amusing at times. It's powerful too, with enough guts to really rattle your chains!

And lastly, a surprising snippet for trivia fans: Tina Fey (latterly of ‘Saturday Night Live’ fame) did the voices of the featured ’Opera Singer’ and also that of the cockney talking Princess.

This usually begins with a thorough strip down of the machine and a forensic examination of the internal workings. The engineers will be aware of the particular quirks and foibles of any given table and instead of just replacing failed parts they’ll always go the extra mile, swapping out components which are likely to fail in the near future. 

In 1943, Harry Williams founded Williams Manufacturing Company at 161 West Huron Street in Chicago, Illinois.

A Stanford engineering graduate, Williams devised the “tilt” mechanism for pinball machines and their early models often included innovative features and pinball firsts, such as mechanical reel scoring and the "add-a-ball" feature for locations that didn't allow game replays. By 1967, pinball was in the middle of its so-called "golden age", and the number of pinball units sold began to increase dramatically.

The company went on to produce the legendary Addams Family pinball table, which remains one of the world’s most sought after machines and sold over 20,000 units in its time, setting an enviable record that still stands to this day.
